RENT

Jonathon Larson’s vision for this production was to create a popular contemporary artwork that would honour his friends who died from AIDS. There are many parts of this heart breaking show that are still relevant today. For example, during this pandemic, there are many people getting sick and passing due to an uncontrollable disease, just like many people died from AIDS when this show was written, and consumption in La Bohème, which inspired Rent. There are many issues and emotions in Rent and they must be treated with care. Issues that cannot be brushed over and emotions that must be felt. Issues such as financial struggles, genders, sexuality, sickness and judgement. Rent is saying that it is important to love first. If we lead with love that will get us through.
Rent was made for the MTV generation. Jonathon wanted to bring MTV to Broadway, with subtle similarities to well known people such as Kurt Cobain. It was made to resonate with anyone at any time. It encourages audiences instead of focusing inward on problems, issues and broken pieces, to instead turn toward the light, friends, family and support that we can find in one another and the community we live in. Embrace life and pursue it to the fullest, the show urges in its constantly repeated lyric, “No day but today.” The best part of Rent is that the cast is so diverse, a show where everyone could be considered, no matter of race, gender, or sexual orientation. In Burnie, it can be difficult to audition for shows and to feel accepted. This production built a team that could  grow, teach and provide new opportunities for aspiring actors or singers.   Creating a safe place where something new may open up and the freedom of input is encouraged. We believe that in giving everyone a chance and accepting people from all walks of life. Other people’s views, opinions or ideas are always welcome. Constructive criticisms can be such a valuable tool. Different angles/ thoughts make the team stronger and more adaptable. DoMaur is such an inclusive place. I have seen many shows and they seem to accept all people and find a place for those who may be quiet
